Sheikh Hasina to be charged, live broadcast likely
The prosecution department is going to file a formal charge against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at the International Crimes Tribunal tomorrow, June 1, on charges of crimes against humanity. Chief Prosecutor Gazi M.H. Tamim confirmed that the charge is being raised in connection with the genocide, abduction, torture and persecution that took place in July and August. He said, “This case is an important milestone in the history of Bangladesh. After analyzing the evidence, testimony and documents available to us, 8 specific charges have been framed, each of which contains evidence of Sheikh Hasina’s direct or indirect involvement.” According to prosecution sources, the charge sheet includes 4 major incidents of genocide, 3 incidents of extrajudicial killings and a serious allegation of torture of women. The statements of about 50 eyewitnesses and victims, reports from international human rights organizations, video footage and photographs have been attached to the charge sheet. In addition, internal documents of state forces and some audio clips will also be presented as evidence.
