Crucial nuclear fuel for the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant is arriving in Bangladesh from Russia today, Friday (October 2). The fuel is scheduled to reach Dhaka's Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport via a special cargo aircraft.
Project officials stated that after the fuel arrives in the country, it will be transported to the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant on Saturday (October 3) under strict security measures.
Journey Delayed by One Day Due to Complications Regarding Pakistani Airspace
The plan was originally to transport the fuel from Russia on Thursday. However, the flight could not arrive as scheduled due to a last-minute cancellation.
Relevant sources indicated that permission is required from the countries whose airspace the special cargo aircraft must traverse during transport. Although Russia and Bangladesh had completed the necessary preparations, the flight scheduled for Thursday was cancelled because permission to use Pakistani airspace was not obtained.
Under the revised plan, the fuel is being brought to Bangladesh on Friday via a special cargo aircraft.
Rooppur Nuclear Fuel to Arrive in Nine Shipments
Sources from the Ministry of Science and Technology stated that this sensitive fuel for the Rooppur project is being brought into the country under stringent security arrangements.
According to project officials, the fuel will be supplied in a total of nine shipments: seven cargo shipments for the second unit of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant and two for the refueling of the first unit.
Russia's state nuclear energy corporation, Rosatom, has announced plans to complete the entire fuel supply operation by December of this year.
The Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant is the country's first nuclear power project. The initiative aims to add a new dimension to the nation's power generation capacity.
