BNP has welcomed the announcement of the interim government's chief advisor, Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus, to hold national elections in February. The party's standing committee member Salahuddin Ahmed said after the chief advisor's speech on Tuesday evening that this announcement and the previously published July declaration have removed the uncertainty about the elections.
Salahuddin said, "The chief advisor has made two important announcements, one is the July declaration and the other is a specific announcement of the elections through a speech to the nation. We are accelerating both." He said that the people of the country have been waiting for the elections for a long time and now the Election Commission will announce the schedule at the scheduled time.
He expressed optimism, "The upcoming elections will be free, fair, impartial and internationally acclaimed. Let everyone in the country be prepared for these elections, this is our call."
The BNP leader believes that this announcement will increase political stability in the country. He said, “Uncertainty in business, trade and investment will end, and dynamism will return in all areas.”
Regarding the July Declaration, he said, “The promises contained in that declaration will receive constitutional recognition and will be established in the constitution through due process. In addition, granting the status of national heroes to the martyrs of the July Uprising is an important step.”
He also mentioned, “The promise to provide proper legal protection to the families of the martyrs, the injured and the protesting students and the public, and the suggestions given by the Chief Advisor to create an environment for people to exercise their voting rights in the elections are very important.”
