Donald Trump has publicly vented his anger over the lack of cooperation from allies over the Middle East crisis. He has criticized the Western military alliance NATO after his call for allies to send warships to ensure the security of the Strait of Hormuz failed.

In a post on his social media, Trump said that most NATO member countries have shown reluctance to participate in the US military operation against Iran. Although they agree with the US position in principle, they are lagging behind in practical steps, he commented.

In Trump’s words, “We ensure their security, but they do not stand by us in times of need.” He also said that the US has achieved significant military successes, so they do not ‘need’ NATO’s assistance now and do not expect it in the future.

Trump had earlier called on allies to send naval forces to bolster security in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital trade route for the world. But almost all Western countries, including the European Union, have not responded to that call.

European leaders made it clear at a meeting in Brussels, Belgium, that they do not want to get directly involved in the conflict. Europe's top diplomats said that their navies are already operating in various regions, so deploying new troops to Hormuz is not possible at this time.

According to analysts, the incident indicates a distance between the United States and its traditional allies. As differences within NATO come to light, questions may also arise about the effectiveness and unity of the alliance in the future.
