Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Chairperson, former Prime Minister and one of the country's most influential political figures, Begum Khaleda Zia, is no more. (Inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi raji'un). She breathed her last at 6 am today (December 30) at the capital's Evercare Hospital while undergoing treatment for a serious illness. Her death has cast a shadow of grief over the entire country.
This uncompromising leader, who was active in politics for more than four decades, had reached the age of 80 at the time of her death. She was the wife of former President of Bangladesh Shaheed Ziaur Rahman and served as the three-time elected Prime Minister. Her leadership, political firmness and uncompromising stance will remain a unique chapter in the political history of Bangladesh.
The countrymen are deeply saddened by the demise of this leader, who was popular at home and abroad, especially among the female prime ministers of South Asia. From party leaders and activists to common people, fans and followers, tears are flowing as they bid her farewell for the last time. Her death is an irreparable loss not only to a political party but also to the political arena of the country.
It is learned that Begum Khaleda Zia was by her side in her last moments. Her eldest son and acting chairman of BNP, Tarique Rahman, who returned to the country after a long 17-year exile, her daughter-in-law Dr. Zubaida Rahman, granddaughter Barrister Zaima Rahman, Syeda Shamila Rahman, wife of younger son Arafat Rahman Koko, and relatives were by her side. In addition, top leaders and well-wishers of the party were present.
The death of the former Prime Minister has caused deep grief among people from all walks of life, including the political arena of the country. A crowd of mourners was seen at various places including Evercare Hospital located in the capital's Bashundhara residential area, the BNP Chairperson's residence in Gulshan, and the party's central office in Nayapaltan. Her fans, followers and the common people are in tears.
Begum Khaleda Zia will forever be remembered as a symbol of uncompromising leadership, struggle to restore democracy and political determination. Her departure has created a void in Bangladeshi politics, which will not be easily filled.
