Jamaat has adopted the characteristics of Awami League: Rashed Khan

Published: 04:15 17 August 2026
Prime Minister's political assistant Rashed Khan has alleged that Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and Islami Chhatra Shibir have adopted various characteristics of Awami League as opposition parties. He claims that Jamaat will not be tolerant of dissent if it comes to power in the future.
Rashed Khan made these comments in a post on his verified Facebook page on Sunday (August 16) night.
Rashed Khan's comments on Jamaat-Shibir
In his post, Rashed Khan criticized Jamaat-Shibir in harsh terms. He alleged that after the attack on the leaders and activists of the People's Rights Council in Kushtia, Jamaat-Shibir showed strength with domestic weapons and sticks.
According to him, after seeing the recent events, he felt that Jamaat-Shibir's political behavior has changed and they have moved away from their previous position.
‘Jamaat has acquired all the characteristics of Awami League’
Rashed Khan said that while opposition political parties were seen as relatively oppressed and submissive in the past, he believes that Jamaat has acquired various characteristics of Awami League after becoming the main opposition party.
He further claimed that Jamaat may not provide sufficient political space for dissenting political parties and ideologies if it comes to power in the future.
However, these statements are Rashed Khan’s political comments and allegations; Jamaat’s statement or reaction on this issue needs to be considered separately.
Praise for leaders of the People’s Rights Council
In his speech, Rashed Khan praised the People’s Rights Council President Nurul Haque Nur and General Secretary Hasan Al Mamun. He said that the leadership has taken a cautious stance against those within the party who wanted to create a close position with Jamaat.
He thanked the leadership of the People’s Rights Council in this regard and urged them to be politically vocal against Jamaat.
Protest against Jamaat's statement
Rashed Khan claimed that Jamaat and its Secretary General had made critical statements about the People's Rights Council. He protested against the statement.
At the same time, he also claimed that the People's Rights Council had a role in the country's recent democratic movement and political changes.
Contradictory statements about political role
In his Facebook post, Rashed Khan claimed that the People's Rights Council had a greater role than Jamaat in the country's democratic movement and anti-fascist political struggle.
He said that when Jamaat was politically hidden, the People's Rights Council was active in the street movement. His statement revealed a comparative assessment of the positions and roles of the two parties in the recent political developments.
A new discussion has been created in the country's political arena based on these statements by Rashed Khan. However, if the statements of the other parties concerned are available, it will be possible to evaluate the matter more clearly.
