Jatiya Nagorik Party (NCP) member secretary and MP Akhtar Hossain has said that the arrest of former President Shahabuddin Chuppur cannot be prevented by invoking Article 51 of the Constitution. He made it clear that this specific article of the Constitution does not provide any kind of constitutional protection against his wrongdoing or arrest. He made these remarks at the NCP's 'July Awakening' march and road meeting organized at Jibannagar Mukta Mancha in Chuadanga last Sunday night with the resolve of 'building a Bangladesh of justice, democracy, rights and prosperity'.
In his speech, Akhtar Hossain harshly criticized the political stance of the opposition party and alleged that BNP, as a major political party, has taken a stand against the hopes and aspirations of the people. He claimed that even though the majority of the country voted 'yes' in the referendum earlier, BNP has not shown sincerity in implementing that popular vote. At the same time, he accused the party of trying to partyize the Election Commission as well as various state structures in its own way.
Other central leaders of the NCP also spoke at this road meeting in Chuadanga. Joint Member Secretary Molla Mohammad Faruk Ahsan, Joint Convener Sarwar Tushar and Joint Member Secretary Dr. Mahmuda Mitu spoke among the party's central leadership. At the meeting, the central leaders reiterated the NCP's position on state reform and protecting democratic rights.
Chuadanga District NCP Convener Khwaja Amirul Bashar Biplob, Member Secretary Alamgir Hossain and Organizing Secretary Md. Local leaders and activists from all walks of life, including Sohel Parvez. In addition, local leaders of the Student Movement Against Discrimination, Chhatra Shakti and Jamaat-e-Islami were also present to express solidarity. The organizers said that in continuation of the programs in Jhenaidah and Chuadanga, this special 'July Awakening' march of NCP will continue in Chuadanga Sadar as well.
