The diplomatic relations between Israel and Australia have faced a new major strain. Since the recognition of the Palestinian state, the mutual accusations and counter-accusations between the two countries have intensified.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has directly attacked Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. He alleged that Albanese has 'betrayed' Israel and abandoned the Jewish community in Australia.

Crisis over Palestinian recognition

Last week, Australia officially recognized the state of Palestine. Earlier, Israel had already expressed anger when the UK, France and Canada made the same decision. Relations between the two countries began to deteriorate rapidly after Australia announced this decision.

Tensions rise over visa cancellation

Australia recently revoked the visa of Israeli far-right politician Simcha Rothman. He was scheduled to attend several events organized by the Australian Jewish Association. However, the Australian government said that those who spread messages of hatred or division will not be allowed to enter the country.

In response, Israel revoked the visas of Palestinian Australian representatives and warned that future applications for Australian government visas would be strictly examined.

The top leaders of the two countries have clashed

Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu said, “History will remember Albanese as a weak leader.” On the other hand, Australian Immigration Minister Tony Burke responded, saying, "The main reason for Netanyahu's anger is Australia's recognition of Palestine. The real meaning of strength is to save lives, not to kill or starve people."

Australian Prime Minister Albanese also said in a strong tone, “The way innocent people are dying in Gaza and suffering from food and water shortages is completely unacceptable.”

Israeli opposition camp’s response

Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid is also critical of Netanyahu. He said, “Netanyahu is the most toxic politician in the Western world. In today’s democratic world, standing up for the truth is what makes a leader strong, and confronting Netanyahu is a symbol of that strength.”

Global context

Out of the 193 member states of the United Nations, 147 countries have so far recognized the state of Palestine. According to the Hamas-controlled Gaza Health Ministry, more than 62,000 people have been killed in the ongoing war since October 7, 2023.

Analysts believe that this stalemate in Israel-Australia relations could take the Middle East crisis to a new level.
