There has been tension over the transfer of social activist and environmentalist Sonam Wangchuk to the police hospital from the ongoing hunger strike at Jantar Mantar in the Indian capital Delhi. The police said that this step was taken on the advice of the court as her physical condition deteriorated due to the long-term hunger strike.

A team of police in plain clothes reached the hunger strike site early on Saturday (July 18), formed a security cordon and took Wangchuk to Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi in an ambulance. At that time, a section of the supporters present protested, which led to temporary tension there.

Police claimed that Wangchuk needed urgent treatment as her health was at risk due to the long-term hunger strike. According to doctors, if her physical condition deteriorates further, there was a risk of damage to her vital organs.

According to hospital sources, Wangchuk, who is undergoing treatment, is currently conscious and her condition is stable. It is also known that she has lost significant weight during the hunger strike.

Earlier, in a speech to supporters, Wangchuk said he had intended to participate in a peaceful program scheduled for the session of parliament. However, he was transferred to the hospital due to his health condition.

Police have urged protesters to conduct the program peacefully and maintain law and order.
