Three executed by lethal injection on the same day

Three convicted murderers were executed by lethal injection in the US states of Oklahoma, Tennessee and Alabama. This is the first time that three people have been executed on the same day in the country since 2010.

The executions were carried out separately in the three states on Thursday (August 13).

According to the Tennessee Department of Corrections, 66-year-old Anthony Hines was executed at a maximum-security prison in Nashville.

Hines was convicted of the March 1985 murder of motel cleaner and mother of four Katherine Jenkins.

Earlier, in May, another death row inmate in Tennessee failed to be executed. The procedure was canceled after medical workers could not find his blood vessel. This was the first successful execution in the state since then.

Meanwhile, 70-year-old Carlos Cuesta-Rodriguez was executed at Oklahoma's McAlester Prison. He was sentenced to death for the 2003 murder of his live-in partner, Olympia Fisher.

Jeremy Williams, 42, was also executed in Alabama. He was convicted of raping and murdering five-year-old Kamari Holland in 2021.

According to the Death Penalty Information Center (DPIC), this is the highest number of executions in a single day in the United States since 2010.

The deaths of these three bring the number of executions in the United States this year to 22. Of these, 12 were carried out in Florida, four in Texas, three in Oklahoma, and one each in Arizona, Tennessee and Alabama.

The death penalty has already been abolished in 23 of the 50 states in the United States. Three more states—California, Oregon, and Pennsylvania—have temporary moratoriums on executions.

The United States executed 47 people last year, the most since 2009. In 2009, the country executed 52 people.

The method of execution in the United States is also controversial. Of the 47 executions carried out last year, 39 were carried out by lethal injection. Three were executed by firing squad and five by nitrogen hypoxia.

Nitrogen hypoxia involves the use of nitrogen gas through a mask. The United Nations has condemned the method as cruel and inhumane.
