The young students of Bangladesh have received two bronze medals and four honorable mentions in the International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO). In the 65th World Series of Mathematics, the Bangladesh team secured the 65th position by getting a total of 83 marks. A total of 609 students from 108 countries participated in this event this year. 81 of them are girls.
The finale was held at the 90-year-old 'The Forum' in the host city of Bath, United Kingdom, on July 21 at 4 pm local time.
Manami Zaman of Vikarunnisa Noon School and College (mark 20) and SMA Nahian of Dhaka College (mark 17) got bronze medals for the Bangladesh team. Apart from this, students of Chittagong Baklia Government College Jitendra Barua (15 marks), Barisal Cadet College Musahid Ahmad (12 marks), Md. Nafiz Noor Tasveen (10) of Birshrestha Noor Mohammad Public College and Tahsin Khan (9 marks) of Mymensingh Zilla School got it.
Manami Zaman of Vikarunnisa Noon School and College, who won the bronze medal, said, "I participated in IMO for the first time this year. I was very excited to get the chance to participate in the competition. I am very happy to win the bronze medal. Hopefully, I will be able to shine the face of the country by getting better results in the future.
Dhaka College SMA Nahian, who got the bronze medal, said, 'I could not perform as expected. But happy to participate in the adverse conditions and win the bronze medal.
Congratulating the young mathematicians for this result, the president of Bangladesh Mathematics Olympiad Committee, distinguished educationist Prof. Mohammad Kaykobad. He told the students to work hard and practice to achieve better results.
United States first in the competition
The United States finished first in the competition this year with a team finish of 192 out of 252 and five gold medals and one silver medal. China was second with 190 marks and the same number of medals, South Korea was third with 168 marks with two gold and four silver medals and India was fourth with 167 marks with four gold medals, two silver medals and an honorable mention.
Apart from this, Bangladesh's neighboring countries Sri Lanka ranked 70th, Pakistan ranked 75th, Myanmar ranked 89th, Nepal ranked 90th and Bhutan ranked 103rd.
Every year students have to solve a total of six problems of Geometry, Combinatorics, Number Theory and Algebra in two days. A total of 9 hours is available for 4 and a half hours for three solutions per day. A maximum of six contestants from pre-university level from each country can participate.
Including this year, students of Bangladesh have won 1 gold, 7 silver, 37 bronze and 44 honorable mentions in the International Mathematics Olympiad.
It should be noted that the 65th International Mathematical Olympiad started with the inaugural session on July 15 and ended with the closing ceremony on July 21.
The Bangladesh Mathematics Olympiad Committee has selected a six-member Bangladesh Mathematics Team for the 65th IMO by organizing the Nationwide Mathematics Olympiad under the sponsorship of Dutch-Bangla Bank and the overall management of Prothom Alo.
