Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan has been granted bail. His bail application in the case of an attack on military infrastructure in May 2023 was granted by the Supreme Court on Thursday (August 21).

A three-member bench headed by Chief Justice Yahya Afridi made the decision. Imran was brought to the High Court after the Lahore High Court had earlier refused to grant him bail. The Supreme Court said that he can be released from prison if there are no other cases or detention orders.

However, Imran is still not fully free as he is accused in a corruption case. Shehbaz Sharif came to power after 72-year-old Imran Khan lost the prime ministership in a no-confidence vote in 2022. Since his ouster, he has been facing a series of cases.

Many leaders of Imran Khan's party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), have also been embroiled in similar cases. After his brief arrest in May 2023, his supporters attacked several locations in Rawalpindi, including the army headquarters.
