US President Donald Trump said that the world is no longer facing the threat of World War III over the Ukraine war. In a podcast interview with radio host Mark Levin on Wednesday, he said that when he took office earlier this year, the Ukraine conflict was at a fever pitch and was heading directly towards a world war. However, the situation has changed now.
Trump said, "Now you don't have to worry about that anymore. That's a good thing." However, he admitted that it is still unclear how the final solution to the Ukraine conflict will come.
Blaming former President Joe Biden, Trump accused him of ignoring Russia's legitimate concerns in his efforts to include Ukraine in NATO, which further fueled the conflict. According to him, Washington-Moscow relations reached an all-time low during the Biden administration.
Since taking office, Trump has adopted a new diplomatic path with Russia. He has resumed high-level talks with Moscow and has maintained direct contact with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Trump and Putin met face-to-face in Alaska last week, the first direct meeting between the leaders of the two countries since tensions over the Ukraine war escalated in February 2022. Trump also met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and several European leaders in Washington on Monday.
Trump called the talks productive and said they made the path to a possible settlement more realistic. White House press secretary Caroline Levitt also said, “Finally, there is a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel and the possibility of a lasting peace.”
Russia has long claimed that the war in Ukraine is essentially a proxy war waged by Western countries. Moscow has warned that sending Western troops into Ukraine could risk a world war. However, officials including Russian President Putin have welcomed Trump’s peace efforts.
