High blood pressure 'silent killer' for kidneys

Published: 07:30 19 May 2024
Medicines are a daily companion for those with high blood pressure. Many people lack awareness of high blood pressure. A new study suggests that long-term uncontrolled blood pressure can be very harmful to the kidneys. Studies have shown that 50 percent of patients with high blood pressure are at risk of kidney failure. Which can also lead to complications like dialysis and transplant in the future.
According to doctors, uncontrolled blood pressure causes narrow and brittle blood vessels spread throughout the body. Arteries adjacent to the kidneys can either be too stiff or too weak. As a result, blood filtration is disturbed.
Accumulated pollutants are usually excreted from the body through urine. Kidneys help to do that. But if the kidneys fail to function properly, the harmful substances reverse and start mixing with the blood.
Later there is no other way to filter the blood except dialysis. But not just the kidneys. Uncontrolled blood pressure can also damage the heart, brain and eyes.
