Tarique Rahman Vacates Bogura 6 Seat, to Take Oath from Dhaka 17 By-Election Ahead

BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman has formally vacated the Bogura–6 parliamentary seat by submitting a letter to the Election Commission, paving the way for a by-election in the constituency. He was elected from both Bogura–6 and Dhaka–17 in the 10th National Parliamentary Election. According to party sources, he will take oath as a Member of Parliament from Dhaka–17 tomorrow.
Confirming the development, Election Commission Secretary Akhtar Ahmed said the Commission has received Tarique Rahman’s letter relinquishing Bogura–6 while retaining Dhaka–17. The Commission will now proceed in accordance with the law to declare the seat vacant and announce the schedule for a by-election.
Under existing electoral law, a candidate may contest from up to three constituencies. However, if elected from multiple seats, the candidate must retain only one and vacate the others within a stipulated time. The Election Commission is then required to hold by-elections in the vacant constituencies. Following Rahman’s decision, Bogura–6 will head to a fresh vote, potentially reshaping the local political landscape.
Political observers suggest that retaining Dhaka–17 carries strategic significance, as a capital-based constituency often holds greater political visibility and influence. Meanwhile, discussions are reportedly underway within the party regarding a potential nominee for the upcoming by-election in Bogura–6.
