National Citizens Party (NCP) convener and opposition chief whip Nahid Islam has criticized the government over the new presidential election. He said that the new presidential election is being held within the framework of a fascist system.

He said these things while talking to reporters at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban on Thursday (August 20) regarding the presidential election.

‘Partialization is also happening in the presidential election’

Nahid Islam alleged that the government has cheated on the referendum verdict and has also cheated on the anti-fascist movement.

He said that partyization is happening all over the country. Along with various levels of administration, candidates have been given through partyization in the presidential election as well. He claims that the Prime Minister is deciding the issue of the presidential election.

According to Nahid Islam, when candidates are decided in advance, there is no opportunity to vote freely. For this reason, the opposition does not consider the government to be in favor of democracy.

Questions about the balance of power

Nahid Islam also commented that the country is not moving towards the kind of balance that should exist between the President and the Prime Minister through the current election process.

According to him, ensuring the balance of power in the state structure is an important issue of a democratic system. But the opportunity to establish that balance is limited in the current process.

Why is the opposition party participating in the presidential election?

Although criticizing various decisions of the government, Nahid Islam argued in favor of the decision to participate in the presidential election.

He said that the opposition party is participating in the presidential election to clarify its position on democracy. The opposition party has fielded candidates with the aim of sending a message to the people and making the presidential election competitive.

'People's awareness about the election will increase'

Nahid Islam said that even though the necessary reforms have not been completed, the opposition party has fielded candidates in the presidential election. As a result, public discussion on the presidential election will be created and people's awareness about the election process will increase.

At the same time, he commented that the opposition party's position on the democratic system will also be clear.
