After BNP's landslide victory in the 13th National Parliament elections, new rumors have emerged in Bangladeshi politics about a possible nomination for the post of President. According to party sources, Dr. Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, a senior member of the BNP's Standing Committee, is considered the strongest candidate for the post. In addition, the name of another influential leader of the party and the chairman of the election management committee, Nazrul Islam Khan, is also in discussion.
According to political analysts, the possibility of a change in this post has arisen in the context of the possible resignation of the current President Md. Shahabuddin. In an international interview in December last year, the 75-year-old President himself said that he is willing to leave the post voluntarily. Although his constitutional term is until 2028, he hinted at the possibility of resigning after the formation of the government due to the new political situation.
79-year-old Dr. Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain has been elected as a member of parliament for the fifth time from the Comilla-1 constituency. A former professor of the Department of Geology at Dhaka University, this leader has previously served as the Minister of Energy and Health. He also made an important contribution to shaping public opinion abroad during the Great Liberation War. Political circles believe that he may become the President during the new government, where his name has already been mentioned in party rallies and leadership levels.
On the other hand, although Nazrul Islam Khan is in the discussion for the post of President, a large section of the party has voted in favor of seeing him as the Prime Minister's political advisor. In the recently concluded elections, he demonstrated his skills as the convener of the party's election management committee and presented important speeches at the central meeting.
According to internal sources in the BNP, the name of the President may be finally announced within a few days after the formation of the cabinet. For now, the eyes of the political circles are on the oath-taking ceremony of the newly elected cabinet, from which clear indications about the next President can be obtained.
