56 percent of Bangladeshis do not understand PR methods: Salahuddin Ahmed

Published: 05:27 4 October 2025
BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed said that the state is not a child's play, the fate of 180 million people cannot be played with. BNP will never bow to the whims of any political party. The people of the country are the ones who make the final decision.
He said these things as the chief guest at a discussion meeting on the occasion of the 37th founding anniversary of the National Democratic Party (NDP), a nationalist like-minded alliance, at the Engineers Institution Auditorium in Ramna, the capital, on Saturday (October 4).
No one has the right to change the constitution
Salahuddin Ahmed said that no one has the right to change the constitution of Bangladesh without a legal and constitutional process. If the constitution is changed in this way, the same demands will be raised again and again in the future. He also said that the will of the people has been expressed through the mass uprising. But to implement that intention, the Supreme Court had to be approached. The formation of the interim government and the oath of the advisors were valid only on the basis of the Supreme Court's opinion.
Confusion over PR system
Regarding the proportional representation system (PR), the BNP leader said that 56 percent of Bangladeshis do not understand this system. So how logical is it to try to mislead the nation by demanding such a system?
Allegations of conspiracy to sabotage the election
Salahuddin Ahmed alleged that a political party was conspiring to create instability in the election and delay or sabotage the election. He warned that if the election is delayed in Bangladesh, the scourge of fascism will start again.
Call to return to the interests of the people
He said that those who are sacrificing national interests for base political purposes should return to the right path for the interests of the people. Salahuddin Ahmed also said that the results of the discussions of the National Consensus Commission based on the July Charter are being implemented. However, the responsibility of implementing the issues that need to be changed in the constitution will rest with the next parliament.
NDP Chairman Abdullah Al Harun presided over the discussion meeting. Other speakers included Rashed Khan, General Secretary of the Rights Council, ATM Golam Maula Chowdhury, President of the National Democratic Party, Khandaker Lutfar Rahman, General Secretary of the Bangladesh Socialist Party, Syed Nurul Islam, among others.
