A house in Shibrampur village in Banibah union of Rajbari Sadar upazila has been sheltered by thousands of migratory birds. The entire village has become filled with the chirping of birds. The arrival of these birds has added a new look and vitality to the rural environment. People from different classes and professions are flocking to see birds every day.
This scene can be seen on the ground, in the Karbari area, a little west of Banibah market in Sadar upazila. As soon as you enter the house from the paved road onto the unpaved road, you will see a beautiful environment surrounded by ponds and trees. Hundreds of migratory birds have built nests in those big trees. They are flying in groups in the sky. Some are returning home, some are flying away again.
White-bellied birds and pancouri have been seen in the trees. Egg shells and a few dead chicks are scattered on the pond.
A member of the household, Akash Kar, said, “Last year, some birds came, but they didn’t stay long. This time, the number is much higher. Their calls wake us up in the morning and afternoon. During the day, the whole house is bustling with chirping. Sometimes, babies fall and die in storms and rains, but we still want them to stay here.”
Another member of the household, Moushumi Akter, said, “Almost all the trees in our house now have bird nests. Sometimes they fly overhead, even drop feces, but still, seeing them fly fills my heart. Now I feel like they are members of our family.”
He also said, “Many come to hunt birds, we stop them. Still, some secretly climb trees and hunt. It is very painful.”
Rajbari District Udichi General Secretary Ejaz Ahmed said, “These migratory birds mainly come from cold countries in search of shelter and food. Their presence increases local biodiversity and maintains balance in the environment. We should all protect these birds and ensure shelter.”
Mir Sayedur Rahman, officer-in-charge of the Rajbari Forest Department, said, “We have visited the site. The Forest Department is monitoring the situation to ensure that the birds are not disturbed in any way. One of our officers has been there every afternoon for the past week.”
Such beauty of nature and the presence of birds have brought joy to the locals. Many are saying, “Shibrampur is now a unique bird kingdom.”
