Bollywood actress Janhvi Kapoor has taken legal action against the objectionable and indecent content spread online using her name, picture and identity. In her case, the Delhi High Court has ordered the removal of 552 objectionable URLs.

A total of 6,884 URLs, social media accounts and other online content were raised in Janhvi Kapoor's case. These included pornographic content, AI-generated fake images, accounts created using identities, impersonation and commercial exploitation of her name and identity.

However, the court did not order the removal of all the links at once. The Delhi High Court felt that giving a blanket takedown order by considering thousands of URLs in the same way would be overly broad. Therefore, emphasis was placed on identifying the objectionable content in a separate category.

552 objectionable links removed

After reviewing the content initially submitted to the court, 552 URLs were found to contain highly indecent or pornographic content. The case alleged that Janhvi Kapoor's identity and picture were used in these contents without her permission.

The court initially felt that there was a strong prima facie case in favour of Janhvi in this regard. Besides, there is a possibility of irreparable damage to her personality and reputation if the contents are online. Due to this, the parties concerned have been directed to remove the 552 URLs immediately.

Court's different position on fan pages

The court did not consider all the fan pages in Janhvi's case as illegal. According to the court's observation, a fan page in the name of an actress may contain her movies, performances, pictures, praise or criticism. It is not reasonable to close these pages just because they use the star's name or picture.

However, if a fan page spreads indecent content, uses the celebrity's identity to make money illegally or uses her personality rights commercially, then there is a chance to take action against it.

Concerns about AI deepfakes

The case also raised issues of AI-generated deepfakes and videos, fake social media accounts and commercial activities using Janhvi's identity. The court emphasized on considering these contents separately instead of lumping them together with ordinary fan pages or legitimate online activities.

This court's decision has mainly clarified two things - on the one hand, a person can be given legal protection from spreading indecent or illegal content using his identity and picture, on the other hand, legitimate opinions, criticism or fan activities cannot be completely banned.

Janhvi was last seen in the movie 'Peddi'

On the work front, Janhvi Kapoor was last seen in the Telugu-language action-drama movie 'Peddi'. She starred opposite Ram Charan and Shivrajkumar in the film. The film, which was released in 2026, was later released on OTT platforms.

Janhvi's case has set an important legal precedent on the boundaries between celebrity rights, online privacy, AI-generated deepfakes, and freedom of expression.
