At least 15 policemen were killed in a deadly suicide attack in Bannu district of Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. Terrorists attacked the Fateh Khel police post with a vehicle loaded with explosives on Saturday night. Three more policemen were seriously injured in the incident.
Police sources said that a total of 18 members were on duty at the post at the time of the attack. Immediately after the suicide blast, the armed attackers opened fire from all sides with heavy weapons. At the same time, international media reports said that the attack was also carried out using drones or quadcopters.
The intensity of the explosion completely destroyed the police post. An armored vehicle at the scene and several nearby buildings were also severely damaged. The sound of the explosion and gunfire spread panic throughout the area.
Immediately after the attack, security forces surrounded the scene and started a search operation. A state of emergency was declared in local hospitals.
Rescue teams recovered 15 bodies and three injured policemen from the rubble on Sunday morning and declared the operation over.
The attack is being seen as one of the biggest and most horrific incidents in the recent surge in extremist violence in Bannu district. Security forces have beefed up security in the entire area and are conducting combing operations to nab the perpetrators.
