All the risks that can occur if you don't take care of your eyes during pregnancy!

During pregnancy, a woman's body undergoes various physiological changes. In particular, hormonal fluctuations affect various parts of the body, and their special effects can also be observed in the eyes. Although many changes become normal after delivery, some problems can turn into permanent complications. Therefore, taking care of your eyes during pregnancy is very important.
When the amount of water in the body increases during pregnancy, the cornea of the eye also changes. This causes the cornea to become thicker and more curved, resulting in problems with refraction. Usually, mild myopia or a tendency to see distant objects blurry is created. Although this change heals on its own after delivery, temporary glasses can still be used if necessary.
Due to increased levels of estrogen and prolactin, tear production decreases, which causes dry eyes. As a result, the eyes may become red, itchy, or burning. In this situation, it is necessary to use artificial tears or eye drops as advised by the doctor.
Pregnancy is particularly risky for those who already have diabetic retinopathy. Hormonal changes can worsen the disease and cause bleeding in the eyes, which can lead to permanent blindness. Trying to control blood sugar levels too quickly can also be harmful. Therefore, it is important to control diabetes before pregnancy and seek regular eye care.
Women with hypertensive retinopathy, or eye problems caused by high blood pressure, are also at risk. If blood pressure is not controlled, blindness can occur. Therefore, regular eye exams and medical advice are essential.
In addition, central serous chorioretinopathy can occur due to fluid accumulation in the retina under the influence of cortisol and catecholamine hormones. This can cause sudden vision problems and, if left untreated, can lead to permanent damage.
Glaucoma patients should also take special precautions. Some eye drops used to control glaucoma—such as beta blockers, prostaglandin analogues and alpha-2 agents—should not be used during pregnancy, as these drugs can slow the heart rate of the unborn baby and pose a risk of respiratory distress.
The most important thing is that if you suddenly experience blurred vision or decreased vision during pregnancy, you should not ignore it. You should seek medical attention immediately.
Finally, like other parts of the body, your eyes also undergo various changes during pregnancy. Most of these are temporary, but some problems can pose serious risks. Therefore, regular eye exams, controlling diabetes and blood pressure, and seeking medical advice as needed are the most effective ways to maintain eye health during this time.
