Kurigram shivers in bitter cold

The northern border district of Kurigram is shivering in bitter cold as the intensity of winter increases. The poor people of the district are suffering due to dense fog and icy winds. The minimum temperature in the district has been fluctuating between 11 and 13 degrees Celsius for a week.

The minimum temperature in the district was recorded at 6 am on Friday at 11.4 degrees Celsius. There is a risk of a cold wave over the district within this week, said Subal Chandra, weather observer at the Kurigram Agricultural Meteorological Office.

It is learnt that the bitter cold is being felt due to the continuous mountain frosty wind blowing from the northwest. However, despite the country's lowest temperature being recorded, the day feels comparatively warm. Every day after noon, the bone-chilling cold is felt in the icy winds from the north along with light fog. In this weather, the suffering of working people including daily wage earners, agricultural workers and rickshaw van drivers has been witnessed.

Although the temperature has increased slightly during the day, dense fog is coming down at night. Along with it, it is bitterly cold. This has disrupted public life. People from more than 450 char areas surrounded by 16 rivers in the district, including daily wage workers, are the most affected. Children and the elderly are the most affected. Although 12,000 blankets have been distributed by the government to protect these people from the cold, it is insufficient compared to the need.

Locals said that although the cold is a little less during the day, the cold increases with the fog before evening. Cars cannot be driven at night. According to district administration sources, 12,000 blankets have been distributed in 9 upazilas of the district. In addition, 2.7 million taka has been given to buy warm clothes in 9 upazilas.

Meanwhile, winter-related diseases have increased due to the winter. Children and the elderly are receiving treatment for cold, cough, pneumonia and diarrhea in upazila health complexes including the district headquarters. Doctors are providing treatment along with necessary advice to increase health awareness in winter.
