The nomination paper of Mujibul Haque Chunnu, a prominent leader of a faction of the Jatiya Party and former secretary general of the party, has been cancelled. He had submitted his nomination paper as a candidate for parliament from Kishoreganj-3 (Karimganj-Tarail) constituency in the upcoming 13th National Parliament election. The Returning Officer decided to cancel his nomination paper based on allegations of defaulting on loans from Rupali Bank.
On Sunday (January 4), Kishoreganj Deputy Commissioner and Returning Officer Mohammad Aslam Molla scrutinized the nomination papers of the candidates for Kishoreganj-1, 2 and 3 constituencies. At that time, the nomination paper of this former influential Jatiya Party leader was declared cancelled. At the same time, the nomination paper of BNP candidate and former Education Minister Dr. M Osman Farooq for that constituency has been declared valid.
According to the District Election Office, the nomination verification of the candidates for Kishoreganj-4, 5 and 6 constituencies was completed on Saturday (January 3). The final picture became clearer after the verification of the remaining three constituencies on Sunday.
On the second day of the nomination verification, the nomination papers of 14 out of a total of 32 candidates for the three constituencies were cancelled. On the other hand, the nomination papers of 18 candidates were declared valid. The Election Office said that most of the cancelled candidates were independent candidates.
The Returning Officer's Office said that the main reasons for the cancellation of the nomination papers include discrepancies in the signatures of one percent of voters, errors in the asset account and affidavit, concealment of case information and defaulting on loans. For these reasons, the decision to cancel the nomination papers of several candidates has been taken.
The previous day, the nomination papers of 10 out of 29 candidates were cancelled during the verification. In total, in two days, the nomination papers of 24 out of a total of 61 candidates in six constituencies of Kishoreganj have been cancelled. On the other hand, the nomination papers of a total of 37 candidates have been declared valid.
Meanwhile, the cancellation of Mujibul Haque Chunnu's nomination has created a lot of discussion in the political arena of Kishoreganj. There is now uncertainty about the electoral future of this leader, who has been active in national politics for a long time.
