The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has launched an investigation into major corruption allegations against former Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda and his commission officials, who are discussed in the history of the Election Commission (EC). Allegedly, the government spent Tk 7.5 crore by showing fake programs in the name of training, which amounts to a major waste and embezzlement of state funds.
On Monday (July 28) afternoon, ACC Director General Md. Akhter Hossain told reporters that an investigation has been launched against former CEC KM Nurul Huda, the commissioner, the Election Commission secretary and the concerned officials for spending money outside the policy, organizing fake training programs and losing government funds.
He said, "There have been allegations of spending money in the name of training during the 11th National Parliament and 5th Upazila Parishad elections. The initial investigation has found a loss of about 74.757 million taka. The entire matter is now under detailed investigation."
The ACC said that the investigation team's work is ongoing. If necessary, the concerned will be questioned and if necessary, they may be summoned to present information. If any other evidence of financial irregularities or corruption is found, it will also be brought under investigation.
The complaint further states that there is no specific record of any of the trainings mentioned by the Election Commission or information about the presence of participants. Even the venue of some of the trainings was on paper, not in reality.
The allegations of such serious irregularities and corruption from a constitutional institution like the Election Commission have already caused a strong reaction in the political and social arena. The question has arisen in the minds of the common people - if there is no transparency in the institution that is responsible for fair elections, how safe is democracy?
The ACC said that the case process will begin once sufficient evidence is found after the investigation. They are taking this matter very seriously and the investigation process will not be hindered by anyone's influence, said Director General Akhter Hossain.
