Former Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Habibul Awal has been arrested. He is now being taken to the DB office. The Kazi Habibul Awal Commission, which won the title of 'I-Dummy Vote' in the 2024 elections between Awami League party and independent candidates of the same party, was extremely controversial. Most of the activities of that commission were highly controversial.
A major controversy arose over the voter turnout in that election. Although it was reported that 27.15 percent of the votes were cast until 3 pm on the day of the election, the voter turnout was mentioned as 40 percent within an hour. However, when announcing the voter turnout, CEC Kazi Habibul Awal first said that 28 percent of the votes were cast and later corrected it and said 40 percent.
For this reason, BNP filed a case against him. The same case was also filed against the CEC AKM Nurul Huda, who was in charge of the past national elections, and the dictator Sheikh Hasina, who 'won' these three elections.
Habibul Awal was staying out of the public eye after Hasina was overthrown in a student-public uprising. He was arrested by the police today.
Earlier, the police also arrested former Chief Election Commissioner AKM Nurul Huda. Local people detained him in the capital's Uttara on Sunday evening and handed him over to the police. Many have called the voting war between Awami League party and independent candidates in the 2024 elections 'I-dummy vote'. Most of the activities of the Election Commission were controversial and created widespread suspicion among the people. The commission faced widespread criticism, especially for its information on voter turnout.
Although the official voter turnout was only 27.15 percent until 3 p.m. on election day, it suddenly increased to 40 percent within an hour. CEC Kazi Habibul Awal initially stated a voter turnout of 28 percent, but later revised it to 40 percent. This uncertainty and inconsistency created a huge debate.
BNP filed a case in which, in addition to former CEC Kazi Habibul Awal, the names of former Chief Election Commissioner AKM Nurul Huda and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina were mentioned. The case alleged that the 'victory' in that election was ensured through vote manipulation and fraud.
After the protests and uprising by students and the general public, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's government faced severe criticism. Since then, Kazi Habibul Awal has been hiding from the public eye. He was arrested today in a special police operation.
Earlier, former Chief Election Commissioner AKM Nurul Huda was also arrested. He was caught by locals in Uttara in the capital on Sunday evening and later picked up by the police.
