The International Crimes Tribunal recently accepted five serious charges of crimes against humanity against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and issued an arrest warrant against her. The other two accused in the case are former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal and former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun. The tribunal authorities said that the role of these three was like that of an orderer and planner in the genocide and other crimes against humanity that took place in July and August. The case charges Sheikh Hasina with direct and indirect involvement in directing, instigating, instigating the genocide and other crimes against humanity.
This case marks the first time in the country's history that a formal trial has begun for crimes against humanity against a former prime minister and top political leader. The tribunal issued arrest warrants against Sheikh Hasina and Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal after taking cognizance of the case. Meanwhile, the third accused, former IGP Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun, has been arrested by law enforcement and is now in custody.
The formal charge sheet in the case was filed by Muhammad Tajul Islam, Chief Prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal. The charge sheet was submitted to the Registrar's Office of the Tribunal at around 12 noon. Other prosecutors were also present with him at the time. The prosecution said that they have collected sufficient evidence and testimony in support of the charges and are ready to present it before the court.
This incident has created an unprecedented and significant turn in the political arena of Bangladesh. Such charges and arrest warrants against Sheikh Hasina, who has been in power for a long time, can create a major reaction not only in domestic politics but also in the international arena. At the same time, ensuring justice in such cases, admissibility of evidence, and transparency of the legal process have also become extremely important.
