The Chief Prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal, Tajul Islam, has revealed a sensational piece of information, saying that Sheikh Rehana, the younger sister of former Prime Minister and Awami League President Sheikh Hasina, once went to Ganobhaban and held Sheikh Hasina’s feet to demand her resignation. This incident occurred on August 5, during a politically critical time in the country. After this information was released, there was a huge stir in the political arena.

On Sunday (May 25), Chief Prosecutor Tajul Islam presented a written investigation report before the judges of the International Crimes Tribunal. He read out a part of the report and said, “According to information obtained at one stage of the investigation, Sheikh Rehana once went to Ganobhaban and requested Sheikh Hasina to resign and, feeling emotional, grabbed her feet.”

However, the report did not specify in which year this incident took place. According to political analysts, this could have happened between 2013 and 2015, when political unrest in Bangladesh reached its peak. At that time, there was widespread tension over the anti-government movement, international pressure, and the verdict of the war criminals trial.

The Chief Prosecutor's statement has sparked fresh discussions in the political arena. Although no official response has been received from the Awami League yet. There has been no comment from Sheikh Hasina or Sheikh Rehana on the matter.

Opposition leaders are referring to this statement as a reflection of internal strife within the Awami League. Some say that the release of such information proves that there were disagreements over leadership in the party even during the regime. However, many believe that it may have been presented with political motives.

Lawyers and analysts say that if the Chief Prosecutor's statement is accompanied by proper evidence, it is important information not only from the political but also from the perspective of state history. A prominent lawyer said, “The responsibility of verifying the veracity of the information presented in the report is now with the court. However, this has opened the door to an important chapter in our political history.”

The International Crimes Tribunal was formed in 2010 to conduct war crimes trials. Through it, several Jamaat and BNP leaders have been tried. However, the tension and conflict between the government and the opposition parties intensified over this trial. In this context, if there is such a discussion or request within the family about Sheikh Hasina’s resignation, it is politically very significant.

Chief Prosecutor Tajul Islam said that the investigation is still ongoing and some more important information may be released in the future. As a result, this report and related information can play an important role in future politics and history.
