BNP acting chairman and nationalist leader Tarique Rahman joined virtually from London on Saturday night and made a special appeal to the country's interim government. He said that it is necessary to announce a specific date for holding the election now without increasing political instability to determine the future of the country. This will give the people of the country a sense of security and make it possible to re-establish democratic rule.
Tarique Rahman said, "My appeal to the interim government is to immediately set a time when fair and impartial elections will be held. There is no need to unnecessarily confuse the current situation in the country. It is difficult to resist a fallen, runaway dictatorship without establishing a government accountable to the people through the people's vote."
He also said, "The date for the national election should be set without hoping for losses or being caught up in the temptation of greed and profit. The interim government should play a pioneering role in establishing the rights of the people with responsibility."
According to Tarek, “All political parties in the country, including the BNP, have been demanding the interim government to announce a roadmap for the election-related action plan for a long time. But the government has not responded in that way. Instead, they are postponing the issue by imposing various new conditions for more or less reforms on the announcement of the national election date.”
He expressed concern and said, “Because of this, instability is increasing in the political arena. In addition, people from different classes and professions are taking to the streets every day with various demands. In just ten months, the impression of instability is clearly visible inside and outside the government.”
Tarek said, “If the government fails to understand the language of the people’s hopes and aspirations, then political instability will continue to increase. As a result, the situation in the country will become more complex and critical, which will make it difficult for the government to control.”
He also warned the interim government, “It is necessary to be aware of their power and capabilities. Otherwise, the country will face a difficult situation.”
Earlier, Tareq said these things at a program organized to mark the eighth founding anniversary of the National Democratic Movement (NDM) at Lakeshore in Gulshan. NDM Chairman Bobby Hajjat delivered the welcome speech at the program.
Tareq also said, “Establishing a government elected by the people and accountable to the people is very important. Although there are various criticisms, politics in a democratic world is conducted through politicians. Politicians and political parties fulfill the responsibility of running the state by taking the people and being with the people. This is the essence of a democratic world.”
Tareq said, “The government is not an elite club or corporate institution. It is a political institution, where the direct participation of every citizen of the country must be ensured. Ignoring democratic political culture and system encourages depoliticization, which ultimately causes harm to the country.”
He further said, “Depoliticization should not be given importance, but democracy. Out of the 22 recommendations made by the NDM, I have seen 9 points and I think they are timely and realistic. Every political party should prepare itself so that it can fulfill its responsibilities with the mandate of the people.”
Tarek said, “People’s support for the ideology, objectives and proposals is essential for the running of political parties and governments. When they get the mandate of the people, they take on the responsibility of running the state and government. Therefore, it is very important to strengthen the democratic process and rules and regulations. Constitutional institutions should be well-organized and democratic practices should be increased.”
Leaders of various political parties in the country, professionals, diplomats, July Movement fighters, and NDM leaders and activists were present at the event.
