NCP leaders and activists have been obstructed by police while painting graffiti in the Tiger Pass area of Chittagong city. They had an argument and scuffle with the police during this time. Later, three people were taken into police custody to control the situation, but they were released after a while.

The incident took place at around 1 pm on Monday (May 18) in the Tiger Pass intersection area. Earlier, political tension had been building since Sunday night over the allegations of removal of graffiti reminiscent of the July Uprising in the same area. The incident led to exchange of slogans and a tense situation between local leaders and activists of NCP and BNP. Later, the police reached the spot and brought the situation under control.

In view of the situation, additional police were deployed in various areas around Tiger Pass, Lalkhan Bazar and others since Monday morning.

Eyewitnesses said that in the afternoon, when some NCP activists took the initiative to paint new graffiti in the Tiger Pass intersection area, the police stopped them. At that time, an argument started between the two sides and at one stage, a scuffle broke out. Later, the police took the three into their custody.

Chittagong Metropolitan Police Deputy Police Commissioner (North) Amirul Islam confirmed the matter and said that the three were taken into custody due to the fear of deteriorating law and order situation. They were later released. The police are on the highest alert to control the situation.

He further said that this measure has been taken in the interest of public safety and maintaining peace and order.

On the other hand, the NCP leaders and activists present at the scene alleged that an attempt is being made to stifle the spirit of the July mass uprising. They claim that the expectations that were born through the July movement are now being repeated with dictatorial behavior.

They also said that these graffiti are not just wall paintings; Rather, it is a symbol of the memory of the movement, the protest and sacrifice of the youth. Therefore, attempts to prevent or remove them are hurting the feelings of the common people.

Meanwhile, in view of the emerging situation, law enforcement patrols have been strengthened in important areas of the city. On Monday morning, a public notice signed by Chittagong Metropolitan Police Commissioner Hasan Md. Shawkat Ali banned all types of gatherings, processions and meetings from GEC intersection to Dewanhat flyover.
