Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has said that important changes are going to come at the top level of the country's law enforcement agencies after the elected government takes office. Responding to questions from reporters after a meeting chaired by the Prime Minister at the Secretariat on Sunday (February 22), he said that some reshuffles at the top level of the police are inevitable and will be implemented in phases. Although he did not give a clear timeframe for the changes, he indicated that progress will be seen in this regard soon.
Responding to a question on the law and order situation, the minister mentioned the attack on an embroidery factory over extortion. He said that an investigation has been ordered into the incident and a report has been submitted soon. He also assured that strict action will be taken against the culprits. The government's position is clear - those involved in any kind of extortion or violence will not be spared.
The Home Minister also spoke about the upcoming parliamentary session. He said that according to the constitution, a notification has to be issued at least 15 days in advance to convene a session. The proposal from the National Parliament Secretariat will go to the Prime Minister's Office to the President's Office and the President will convene the session on the advice of the Prime Minister. He said that it has already been decided to start the Parliament session on March 12. Initial discussions have been completed on the possible agenda, order of the day and other proposed issues in that session.
However, the Home Minister clarified that there was no discussion regarding the election of the new President. Concerned circles believe that this reshuffle at the top level of the police is seen as part of the steps being taken to strengthen discipline and effectiveness in the overall administrative structure of the government.
