A decision has been taken to dismiss 39 doctors, teachers, officials and employees for their involvement in the barbaric attack on students and public, attempted murder of students, fights, vandalism and arson of vehicles on the university campus on August 4 last year. In addition, 9 more doctors and one employee accused in the same incident have been reprimanded and warned.
This decision was approved at the university syndicate meeting held on Saturday (May 31). This recommendation was made in the investigation report presented at the meeting. The investigation committee formed under Section 8(a)(2) of the University Efficiency and Discipline Ordinance submitted this report.
The report of the investigation committee formed under Section 8(a)(2) of the University Efficiency and Discipline Ordinance said that the allegations made against the 15 accused were proven under Section 5(d, i, k) of the Ordinance, and therefore, it has been recommended to dismiss them under Section 6(l). In addition, 19 out of 23 doctors have been brought under the same punishment as there is evidence of their direct involvement in attacks, vandalism and arson.
The syndicate meeting also decided that the jobs of 96 employees appointed on an ad hoc basis will be made permanent and 22 employees will be promoted.
An investigation into the background of the incident revealed that on August 4, 2024, during the anti-discrimination movement on the university campus, a student was attempted to be killed, along with widespread vandalism, fighting and setting a car on fire. Immediately after the incident, the university authorities formed a primary investigation committee. Then, another committee was formed under Section 8(a)(2) to investigate the matter further.
University Deputy Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Abul Kalam Azad said, "According to the recommendations of the investigation committee, disciplinary action has been taken against those against whom the allegations have been proven. Necessary action will also be taken against those whose investigation is still pending, once the investigation is completed."
As a result of this decision, a large number of doctors, teachers and employees lost their jobs on the eve of the holy Eid-ul-Azha. The issue has created mixed reactions among teachers and employees. However, the university authorities say that they are following a zero tolerance policy to maintain discipline and eliminate the responsibility for violence.
