The court has sent former IGP Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun on a three-day remand in the case of the murder of pedestrian Md. Masudur Rahman Joni during the anti-discrimination student movement in the capital's Jatrabari.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate GM Farhan Ishtiaq gave the order after the hearing on Monday. The investigation officer of the case, CID Police Inspector Sikder Mohitul Alam, presented the former IGP to the court and applied for a ten-day remand. However, the court granted a three-day remand.
The state's lawyer argued in favor of remand, but the defense lawyer said that his client has already been remanded for 75 days and there is no need for a new remand. After the hearing, the judge granted a three-day remand.
It is worth noting that Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun was arrested on September 3. After several rounds of remand, he was taken back to remand.
According to the case sources, on August 5, during the anti-discrimination movement, Md. Masudur Rahman Joni was injured in police firing and attacks by leaders and activists of Awami League affiliates in front of Jatrabari Chowrasta Police Station on his way back to his home in Demra from his workplace. He later died on August 12 while undergoing treatment at Mitford Hospital. A murder case was then filed at Jatrabari Police Station on August 29.
