UK passes law to create a smoke-free generation

The UK is going to enact the world's strictest anti-smoking law. The new proposed law states that anyone born on or after January 1, 2009 will no longer be able to buy tobacco products for the rest of their lives. The country's government plans to completely stop selling tobacco by implementing it in stages. The goal is to create a completely smoke-free generation.
A real-life example of the harmful consequences of smoking is a victim named Gary. Gary, who started smoking as a teenager, is now waiting for bypass surgery after suffering a heart attack at the age of 40. He has also lost some of his eyesight. Gary said, "I thought nothing would happen, but now I understand that I was wrong. It is a truly horrific experience."
The UK government has taken the initiative to bring in the law to prevent such life-threatening situations. Although the current smoking age is 18, this limit will be increased by one year every year. This means that no one will be legally allowed to buy tobacco again from 2027. The government believes that it will be possible to reduce the smoking rate among 14- to 30-year-olds to close to zero within the next decade.
“I know I will never be able to buy tobacco, but I support this law,” said Alfred, a 14-year-old member of a youth club in London. “My mother and brother suffer from coughing because of smoking. I have vowed never to smoke.”
Although smoking rates are falling among young people, the use of vaping or e-cigarettes has increased significantly. Alfred believes that attractive flavors and marketing strategies are behind this. “Cigarettes are always the same, but vaping has a lot of flavor. So many people try it out of curiosity,” he said.
To stop this trend, the government is also planning to limit the advertising and promotion of vaping products. The goal is one thing — to keep the younger generation away from smoking and everything related to vaping.
On the other hand, Gary, who is awaiting surgery, is now preparing for a smoke-free life. He hopes to get his life back on track by participating in a successful quit program. “Why waste your life? If smoking wasn’t so easily accessible, I might be healthy today,” Gary said, addressing future generations.
The proposed law has already passed the UK House of Commons and is currently under consideration in the House of Lords. If the law is finally passed, it is expected that the UK will become a world leader in tobacco control by 2027.
