Salman Shah murder case: Don remanded for 5 days

Published: 03:54 27 August 2026
A court has granted a 5-day remand to actor Ashraful Haque alias Don, arrested in the murder case of filmmaker Salman Shah. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Jewel Rana gave the order after a hearing on Thursday (August 27). Don was earlier taken from jail to the court's custody.
CID investigation officer Inspector Md. Mujibur Rahman had applied for a 7-day remand to interrogate Don in the murder case filed in the death of Salman Shah. After the hearing, the court granted a 5-day remand.
CID hopes to get important information from Don's interrogation
CID claims that if Don is interrogated in police custody, important information can be obtained in the investigation into the murder case filed in the death of Salman Shah. At the same time, the investigation agency hopes to get information about identifying the location of other accomplices involved in the case and arresting them.
Apart from this, the CID also wants to question the Don about how, why and under whose guidance he tried to go abroad despite the ban on foreign travel.
Salman Shah fans form human chain before remand hearing
During the remand hearing of the Don, various factions of Salman Shah fans formed a human chain in the court premises demanding justice for the murder of Salman Shah. They participated in the program with two banners since morning.
One of their banners read - 'Dear hero has been in the grave for 30 years, why are his killers outside?'
The Salman Shah fans who participated in the human chain demanded the immediate arrest of the other accused in the case and a fair investigation by remanding the Don.
Don arrested from the airport
Earlier, the Immigration Police arrested the Don from the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport area in Dhaka in the early hours of August 9. When he was produced before the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court on the same day, the court ordered him to be sent to jail. Later, his bail application was also rejected.
Then, the CID applied for his remand, citing the need to question Don in the investigation into the Salman Shah murder case.
How the murder case was filed
Film actor Salman Shah died on September 6, 1996, at his residence in New Eskaton in the capital. An accidental death case was initially filed at Ramna Police Station in connection with his death.
After a long legal process, on October 20, 2025, the Sixth Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court of Dhaka ordered the incident to be accepted as a murder case. The next day, on October 21, Salman Shah's maternal uncle Mohammad Alamgir filed a murder case at Ramna Police Station.
A total of 11 people, including Salman Shah's ex-wife Samira Haque, his mother Latifa Haque Lucy, businessman and former film producer Aziz Mohammad Bhai, actor Ashraful Haque Don, have been named in the case. In addition, several other unidentified people have been named as accused.
The complaint alleges that the accused killed Salman Shah in a premeditated manner in collusion with each other. However, the allegations in the case should be considered as allegations until they are proven in court.
Salman Shah's death still under discussion after 30 years
Even after the death of Salman Shah, one of the most popular heroes of Bengali cinema, discussions and legal proceedings continue about the incident. For a long time, a section of his family and fans have been demanding that the death be investigated as a murder, not a suicide.
The investigation came under renewed discussion after the order to treat the incident as a murder case in 2025 and the subsequent filing of a case. The arrest of the don and now a 5-day remand have added a new dimension to that investigation.
Now, the focus is on what information the CID gets during the remand interrogation and whether any new information about Salman Shah's death comes to light during the investigation.
