Petang Tarn Shinawatra sworn in as Prime Minister of Thailand. He was sworn in as the country's prime minister on Sunday (August 18) after the royal signature approving him for the post.

She is the daughter of former Thai Prime Minister and tycoon Thaksin Shinawatra. Earlier, the Parliament of this Southeast Asian country elected Petang Tarn Shinawatra as the new Prime Minister.
Al Jazeera reported this information in a report on Monday (August 19).

According to reports, Thailand's King Petangtarn has approved Shinawatra as the country's new prime minister two days after the parliament was elected. Then 37-year-old Petangtarn was sworn in as Thailand's youngest prime minister on Sunday.
Earlier, Petang Tarn's cousin Yingluck Shinawatra served as the first female Prime Minister of Thailand.

According to the media, Petangtarn Shinawatra was elected as the new Prime Minister two days after Thailand's Constitutional Court removed Sretha Thavisin as Prime Minister last Wednesday. Both of them are Phew Thai Party leaders. The Pheu Thai Party came second in the 2023 election and formed the ruling coalition.

Petangtarn now faces the daunting task of reviving Thailand's stagnant economy. Dealing with a military coup and surviving court intervention will also be a huge challenge for him. Four previous administrations led by his party were ousted due to court intervention.

"I really hope that I can restore confidence among the people - that we can create opportunities to improve the quality of life of all Thai people," Petangtarn Shinawatra told reporters after being elected as prime minister last Friday.
319 votes were cast in favor of Petangtarn in the vote held in Parliament. And 145 votes against. Petangtarn is the fourth person from the Shinawatra family to become prime minister in the past two decades. However, three others, including his father Thaksin Shinawatra and Phupu Yingluck Shinawatra, were ousted by military coups or constitutional court rulings.

Incidentally, Petangtarn studied at schools in Thailand and universities in the UK. He worked for several years in the Rende hotel industry group owned by the Shinawatra family. Her husband is the deputy chief investment officer of the industry group.
Petangtarn Shinawatra joined Pheu Thai Party in 2021 and was appointed as party leader in October 2023. His appointment brings new energy to Thailand's top leadership.

Phew Thai party members also hope he can help revive the party's political fortunes.
