Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz has reportedly said that seeing the widespread destruction caused by Israeli military operations in northern Gaza gave him a “good feeling”.

According to Middle East Eye, Katz made the controversial remark while visiting the devastated area. When journalists asked how he felt after seeing the current condition of northern Gaza, he reportedly responded that it was a “good feeling”.

His remarks triggered fresh criticism on social media and in international circles, with many questioning the humanitarian implications of such a statement about an area where homes and civilian infrastructure have suffered extensive damage.

Katz said Gaza’s present condition was not accidental. He described it as the outcome of a planned military policy intended to eliminate what Israel considers long-term security threats.

Explaining the difference between Israel’s previous and current military strategies, Katz said Israeli forces had earlier entered Gaza for temporary operations before withdrawing. Under the present strategy, however, troops are maintaining positions inside areas taken during the campaign while attempting to weaken armed Palestinian groups.

Katz has previously argued that Israeli forces should retain a long-term presence in parts of Gaza for security reasons. Reports have also referred to plans for new military-linked outposts in the territory, raising concerns that Israel may seek to establish extended control over parts of the enclave.

Middle East Eye reported that Katz announced plans for three new outposts directly connected with or controlled by the Israeli military. Critics fear such installations could make Israel’s military presence in Gaza more permanent.

Israel says its operations are intended to counter Hamas and other armed groups and prevent future attacks on Israeli citizens. Palestinian officials, rights organisations and several governments, however, have strongly criticised the scale of destruction, civilian suffering and proposals for prolonged military control.

The full official transcript or complete video of Katz’s latest remarks could not be independently verified. However, if accurately reported, the comments raise serious questions about humanitarian responsibility and the language used by senior officials when discussing the destruction of civilian areas during war.
