The name of Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) Chairman Colonel (retd) Oli Ahmed has been announced as the candidate of the 11-party alliance in the country's 23rd presidential election. The decision was announced after a meeting of the alliance's top leaders on Sunday (August 9).

Earlier, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami decided to participate in the presidential election. The decision was made at a meeting of the party's central executive council in the capital's Moghbazar on Saturday evening. At that time, the names of Jamaat's Nayeb Ameer Dr. Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher, Secretary General Mia Golam Parwar and LDP Chairman Colonel (retd) Oli Ahmed were under discussion as potential candidates.

Oli Ahmed finalized in the alliance meeting

After a meeting of the alliance's top leaders on Sunday, Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman officially announced the name of Colonel Oli Ahmed.

It was reported that he has been nominated for the presidential contest by a unanimous decision of the alliance leaders.

Jamaat Secretary General Mia Golam Parwar, alliance coordinator Dr. Hamidur Rahman Azad, NCP convener Nahid Islam and other leaders of various partner parties were present at the meeting.

Discussion on BNP candidate

There is discussion in political circles that the party's nominated candidate is more likely to be elected since BNP has a majority in the current National Assembly. The responsibility of nominating BNP's candidate for the presidency has been given to party chairman and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
