Container transport stopped due to labor strike at Chittagong port

The workers started the strike on Monday (October 21). Due to this strike by Primeover workers who transport containers, the bringing and taking of containers at Chittagong port has been stopped for the second day.

Chittagong District Prime Mover Trailer, Concrete Mixture, Flatbed and Dump Truck Workers Union has called this strike for various demands including job appointment letter, identity card with photo, payment of wages announced by the government.

Colombo-bound container vessel HRRI was not released today as a significant number of export containers booked from private depots could not reach the port due to the strike.

Ruhul Amin Sikder, Secretary General of Private Container Depot Owners' Association Bikadar, said that due to the strike, it was not possible to take any export containers from the depot to the port since 6 am on Monday. Similarly, containers carrying imported goods could not be brought from the port to the depot.

Cargo vehicles other than containers are coming and going from Chittagong port. The secretary said that the movement of containers in the jetty inside the port is normal. Omar Farooq
