Chaksu's demand for state reform draws criticism at CU, questions over lack of AGS signature

The Central Students' Union of Chittagong University (CSU) has called for an immediate referendum and 'abolition of the fascist structure' through state reform by legally recognizing the July Charter. The demand was made in a statement released on the official Facebook page of CSU at 4:30 pm on Monday.

The statement said that the July Revolution of the students, workers and people of 24 was a bloody movement against discrimination, injustice and the fascist regime. The main goal was not only to change the government, but also to ensure fundamental reforms of the state, prevent corruption and ensure transparency and independence of constitutional institutions. CSU claimed that some political parties, despite signing the July Charter, are obstructing the path of reform and ignoring the aspirations of the young generation.

Criticism has started on campus surrounding CSU's statement. Farhan Ishraq, a student of the history department, said, "There is no news of campus work, a statement on national issues is coming." Law student Sakif Rahman commented, “Is Chaksu something of Jamaat’s party?”

Student Md. Abdul Karim wrote, “I want the meal system to be implemented, dining to be proper, I am reading the election statement. The quality of food in Shah Jalal Hall is very bad. But our student representative does not bother about it. Does the use of Chaksu’s banner, not the party’s, in this statement mean that Chaksu has approval?”

In addition, questions have been raised about the absence of the signature of the Assistant General Secretary (AGS) in the statement published by Chaksu. Students feel that personal political positions have been promoted under the Chaksu banner.

Chhatra Dal’s nominated GS candidate in the Chaksu election, Md. Shafayet wrote, “Jokes of the year, Chaksu is a non-political organization, the voice of all (camp) students.”

However, along with criticism, some students see Chaksu’s initiative as an expression of the political consciousness of the young generation. According to them, it is the demand of the hour for the student community to take a stand on the issue of state structural reforms.
