Sentences announced for three accused in controversial Lamia rape case

The court has announced the verdict in the controversial Lamia rape case in Dumki upazila of Patuakhali.
Judge Nilufar Shirin of the Patuakhali District Women and Child Abuse Prevention Tribunal announced the verdict on Wednesday (October 22) morning.
In the verdict, Shakib Munshi and Sifat Munshi were sentenced to 13 years in prison and Imran to 10 years in prison.
According to court sources, the accused were minors at the time of the incident. Therefore, they have been given the maximum sentence according to the Juvenile Court Act.
Background of the incident
On the evening of March 18, 2025, Lamia (18), daughter of July fighter Shaheed Jasim Uddin, was gang-raped while on her way from her home in Pangashia Union of Dumki upazila.
She herself filed a case against the three as the plaintiff in the incident.
Later, the police filed a charge sheet in the court after investigation.
However, Lamia suffered a mental breakdown after the incident.
On April 26, 2025, she committed suicide by hanging herself in a rented house in Dhaka's Shekhertek area.
Reaction after the verdict
The verdict was announced today after lengthy testimony and arguments.
After announcing the verdict, Public Prosecutor (PP) Advocate Abdullah Al Noman said—
“We have been able to prove the case beyond a doubt. The court has delivered justice.”
On the other hand, District BNP General Secretary and PP Advocate Mujibur Rahman Toton said—
“The verdict in this case has set an example. It has proven that whoever commits a crime must be punished,
no matter how influential he is.”
After the verdict in this controversial and sensational case was announced, the common people and human rights activists present in the court premises expressed satisfaction and relief.
