A video of an inhuman incident that took place in Pabna's Santhia has gone viral on social media. It has been alleged that 75-year-old Kanchan Khatun was mercilessly tortured by her own son and daughter-in-law over a minor family dispute. The mother, who once raised her child in her arms, is seen being held by her own son, who holds her by the throat and beats her to the ground.
The incident took place on Saturday (August 30) afternoon in Ramchandrapur village of Dhopadaha union. The video shows that first daughter-in-law Sonali Khatun threw her mother-in-law to the ground and beat her mercilessly. Then her son Nazrul Islam (45) held her mother by the throat and then beat her to the ground. The old mother was crying, screaming helplessly again and again, but the torture did not stop.
Locals were outraged when such a heartbreaking scene went viral. With the intervention of the administration, army personnel and police launched a joint operation and arrested son Nazrul Islam, daughter-in-law Sonali Khatun, brother-in-law Moniruzzaman (42), sister-in-law Farida Khatun (38) and Murshida Khatun (36).
Ambiya Khatun, the victim of the torture, said in a tearful voice, “My sister-in-law was incited by false accusations in my mother’s name. Then my sister-in-law started beating my mother, and my brother also joined in. My mother’s condition has become so bad that she had to be admitted to the hospital. I just want fair justice for my mother.”
Riju Tamanna, Santhia Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO), said that the administration came to the notice of the video after it went viral. When the police went to the spot, locals stopped them, and later with the help of army personnel, it was possible to arrest the accused.
Anisur Rahman, officer-in-charge (OC) of Santhia Police Station, said, "Five people, including a son and daughter-in-law, have been arrested in connection with the torture of an elderly mother. A case has been filed and they were sent to court on Sunday (August 31) morning."
