Police conducts eight-day drive across the country to prevent extortion: Detention if caught, investigation within 7 days

In the last ten months, people's lives have become miserable due to the violence and extortion in the country. Blood is often shed on the streets in the struggle for politics and power. This has affected the lives of ordinary people, and law enforcement agencies have also come under pressure.
To get rid of this unrest, the police have finally taken a tough path. A nationwide 'eighty-day drive' has begun - with one main goal: to catch extortionists and bring them under the law.
The police headquarters said that this drive began on Tuesday night. Wherever there is extortion, the drive will continue - at markets, ghats, markets, stands, terminals, and even on the sidewalks. If an extortionist is caught red-handed, a 'detention order' will be issued immediately. This means that he can be detained for 30 to 120 days, no bail or lobbying will work.
From the IGP to the DMP Commissioner, everyone is now saying the same message—“No matter who it is, there is no exemption.” Special monitoring orders have been given to all police station OCs, DCs, and ACs. The Detective Branch (DB) has also taken to the field to prepare a list of area-based extortionists and terrorists.
A secret investigation conducted by the Special Branch (SB) has revealed that a total of 2,031 names of extortionists and terrorists have emerged across the country. A detailed report of 457 pages has also been submitted to the police headquarters.
Home Affairs Advisor Lt. Gen. (Retd.) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury has clearly stated, “No matter how powerful they are, there is no exemption for extortionists.” The IGPO has also given the same message. He said that legal action will be taken against those who have cases against them, and those with bad reputations will be brought under preventive detention.
In this operation, 1,572 people have been arrested from across the country in the last 24 hours. More than 1,000 of them are accused in cases or warrants.
Dhaka Range DIG Rezaul Karim Mallick said, “Extortion will not be tolerated anymore. Wherever it is found, it will be caught.” Similarly, the DMP Commissioner said, “I have instructed every police station in Dhaka to strictly suppress extortionists while respecting the law.”
