In the nineties, a talked-about and fearsome name in the criminal world of Dhaka was Subrata Bain, known as Fateh Ali. Born in 1967 at the Holy Family Hospital in Dhaka, Subrata Bain was a son of Jobarpar village in Agailjhar, Barisal. Since childhood, his family lived in a rented house in Moghbazar, where he, along with his mother and three sisters, served as the eldest child in the family. In his educational career, he started from Oxford Mission School in Barisal and passed his SSC from Sher-e-Bangla School in Dhaka. Subrata entered the world of crime when he was admitted to college. After being admitted to Siddheshwari College, he met a political leader and based on that source, he took up arms and started his path of crime.
In 1993, he came to the attention of the police in the murder of a vegetable seller in Madhubazar. After that, his dominance in the criminal world quickly spread through extortion and control of tenders in various areas of the capital, including Moghbazar. Subrata Bain controlled important areas including Moghbazar, Ramna, Karwan Bazar, Madhubagh. At one time, he was sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of Chhatra League leader Murad. Having developed close connections with politics, he worked for BNP in the 1991 elections and became close to the then Home Minister. This political influence made him known as a 'star terrorist'. He got involved in a conflict with Liaquat of Jubo League over control of Moghbazar.
In 2001, Interpol issued a notice in his name, which is still in effect today. After that, he fled to Kolkata and was involved in various crimes there. Subrata was arrested by Kolkata police in 2008 and 2012, but managed to escape. There have also been cases of his arrest in Nepal.
His name has come up as being involved in three murders that recently took place in Hatirjheel and Gulshan areas of Dhaka. It has been reported that his followers were involved in the murder of Jubo Dal leader Arif Sardar in Hatirjheel on April 21. There are allegations of bringing illegal weapons across the border and using them to commit various crimes.
Multiple sources in the law enforcement agencies have confirmed that Subrata Bain and his associates have been involved in various crimes including extortion, land and flat grabbing for a long time. Although he was arrested several times, he was released on bail and became active in the world of crime again.
According to the latest news, his associates were conducting criminal activities under the guise of a garment business from a house they rented in Moghbazar a month and a half ago. In addition, he and his forces have become a big challenge for the law enforcement agencies by bringing weapons from the Indian border and spreading them in Dhaka.
Subrata Bain's criminal life and political strategy have made him a terrible chapter in the country's criminal history. We should learn from his life that crime is never permanent, and coming under the law is the final destination.
