Panchagarh city was occupied by the agitators on the first day of Ahsa Yoga movement. In the midst of the day-long agitation, there have been allegations of attacks, vandalism and arson on the houses of Awami leaders and activists and Chhatra League leaders, including the party office of the district Awami League in Panchagarh.
On Sunday (August 4) from 10:00 a.m., the agitators took out a procession from the Judge Court area of the district town with slogans. Later, the procession ended at Sher Bangla Park area of the district city.
Then the protesters gathered in front of the central Shaheed Minar. At one point they blocked the Panchagarh-Dhaka National Highway at Sher Bangla Park in the district town. Later, the entire area became agitated with processions and slogans.
At one stage of the procession and slogans, bricks were thrown in front of the district Awami League office. Separately, they carried batons to the district Awami League office, reserved women parliament member Rezia Islam, her son district Awami League general secretary Anwar Sadat Samrat, Sadar Upazila Awami League president and former upazila parishad chairman Amirul Islam, municipal mayor Zakia Khatun, district Chhatra League president Abu Mo Noman Hasan, Municipal Awami League President and Sadar Upazila Parishad Vice Chairman Kazi Al Tariq, General Secretary Humayun Kabir Ujjwal, Councilor and Awami League Leader Shafiqul Islam, Hasnat Md. The agitators ransacked houses, cars and businesses of various leaders including Hamidur Rahman and set fire to them. The angry people also ransacked the Sadar Circle office of the district police in Raushnabagh area.
During this time, they insulted the journalists and hindered them from performing their professional duties. They also attacked the Panchagarh Press Club in the afternoon on the charge of photographing the movement. Meanwhile, when the movement started, the members of the law and order forces left the position on the road. The angry people calmed down around 4 pm. Later, the traffic flow was normalized. Also, police, BGB and army were seen patrolling the field. However, despite the incidents of attacks, vandalism, arson, and looting, no casualties were reported.
In addition, it was reported that there was an attack and vandalism on the house of Awami League leaders and activists in Debiganj Upazila of the district on Sunday afternoon. On the other hand, there have been allegations of attacks and arson on houses and shops of Awami League leaders and activists in Tunirhat area of Panchagarh Sadar Upazila till night.
Meanwhile, police, BGB and army were seen patrolling the city when the curfew started at 6 pm. However, people can be seen scattered on the roads in different areas of the city, but the presence of people starts to decrease after 8 pm.
