The decision to ban Jamaat and Shibir was made in the meeting of the 14-party alliance led by Awami League. The government will take a final decision in this regard in the next couple of days.
The meeting of 14 parties was held on Monday (July 29) at Ganobhaban, the official residence of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The meeting was presided over by Sheikh Hasina, the head of the alliance and the president of Awami League.
After the meeting, Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader and 14 party coordinator Amir Hossain Amu briefed the waiting journalists at the gate of Ganobhaban. They told reporters about banning Jamaat and Shibir.
According to multiple sources present at the meeting at Ganobhaban, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said at the beginning of the meeting that Jamaat-Shibir is behind the acts of vandalism, arson and attacks on the police in various districts of the country in recent times. He has intelligence reports on this matter. For a month, Jamaat-Shibir trained people from different districts of the country were gathered in Dhaka.
They are the ones who committed these crimes. In order to uphold the spirit of the liberation war, a decision has to be taken about them.
The leaders of the participating parties gave speeches in the meeting. Rashed Khan Menon, president of Workers Party, said that analysis of the current political situation is necessary. Jamaat-shibir should have been banned earlier.
Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (Jasad) president Hasanul Haque Inu directly proposed to ban Jamaat-Shibir. He said, now is the time to ban Jamaat-Shibir. Apart from banning them, he also proposed to hold street processions to form public opinion on this issue.
Dilip Barua, general secretary of the Communist Party, said that Jamaat-Shibir should be banned.
Towards the end, Sheikh Hasina told the coordinator of the 14 parties, Amir Hossain Amu, to draw the conclusion of the meeting. But he said the issue is important and it should be done by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
According to sources, the Prime Minister while concluding the meeting said that it is clear from the recommendations of the leaders of 14 parties that Jamaat-Shibir needs to be banned in order to uphold the spirit of the liberation war and maintain peace in the country. He agreed to take this decision on the advice of 14 party leaders.
Sources also said that the Prime Minister also said that the government will ban Jamaat-Shibir by completing the necessary process by next Wednesday.
