Coffin procession of protestors at Dhaka University, police throwing sound grenades

After the Ghaibana Janaza program in front of the residence of the Vice-Chancellor of Dhaka University, the protesting students started the coffin procession demanding quota reform.

Until the writing of this report at around 4:30 this afternoon, the police lobbed sound grenades one after the other after observing the march of students. Police fired tear gas shells there till the last news. The students dispersed.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Joint Commissioner Sudeep Kumar Chakraborty told Prothom Alo that the procession was dispersed with the permission of the VC for the safety of the VC's residence and surroundings.

Hasnat Abdullah, one of the co-ordinators of the anti-discrimination student movement, said that they started the procession peacefully after the Ghaibana Janaza. The police attacked there.

Earlier around 4 pm, a large number of students marched through Fuller Road and came in front of the Vice Chancellor's residence. A section of agitators were already present there.

On Tuesday, the funeral procession and coffin procession program was called for those killed in the clashes in various districts of the country including Dhaka. Although the scheduled venue of the program was at the foot of the Raju sculpture. However, the protesting students could not observe it because of the police.

Earlier, the police arrested Daksu's former social service secretary Akhtar Hossain and another person from the spot.

The protesting students said that a few students including Akhtar Hossain gathered at the foot of the Raju sculpture shortly before the scheduled time. But at every entrance leading to the TSC area, a large number of law enforcement personnel were stationed.

Akhtar Hossain and some of the agitating students had a discussion with the members of law and order there. Police tried to arrest Akhtar Hossain.

At that time, the media workers who were there proceeded to talk to the police. But the police lobbed two sound grenades at the media workers. Two blank sound grenades are also fired. At that time, Channel S journalist Soleiman was injured. He was admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

After that, a part of the agitating students took a position in front of the residence of the Vice-Chancellor of Dhaka University. Gaybana Janaza program was performed there.

Earlier, a funeral procession was held under the banner of freedom fighters, students and people in front of the National Museum at Shahbagh. Jubo League general secretary Mainul Hossain Nikhil along with Jubo League and Chhatra League leaders and activists were present there. After the janaza, Chhatra League-Youth League leaders and activists are staying there.

Dhaka University students were also seen having their mobile phones searched and beaten up while leaving Shahbagh. At least three people were beaten between 3:30 and 3:30 p.m. Both of them were protected by the police. He ran into Shahbag police station.
