There is a wind of change in the sports field of Bangladesh. Due to the change in the political pot, several posts including the president of the cricket board BCB have changed. The International Cricket Council (ICC) is also headed for a change in leadership. However, it is going to happen when the current president of the ICC, Greg Barclay, expires. After that, who will come to that responsibility, now that discussion has started.
Barclay will leave the post next November. He said yesterday that he will no longer contest for the third term as the president of the ICC. After that, the name of the Indian Cricket Board (BCCI) secretary Jai Shah is being heard in the race to become the new chairman. He is also currently the president of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC). It now depends on Jai Shah whether the election will be held to select the new chairman. However, several Indian media have discussed that he is going to be the new president of the ICC.
Earlier on Tuesday, Barclay said that he will continue to be the chairman of the ICC. In the same statement, the ICC said, "The nomination form of the current directors to become the future chairman should be submitted by August 27. If there is more than one contestant, there will be an election. The new chairman will take charge on December 1, 2024.
Barclay was first elected as the ICC Chairman in November 2020. Later, in 2022, he took charge of the ICC chief for the second time unopposed. According to the rules, he also had the chance to contest for the ICC chairmanship for the third time. But he is not walking that path. As a result, anyone new to that responsibility is seen to be so sure.
Meanwhile, Jai Shah, who has been rumored to take charge of the ICC, has one more year left in his BCCI tenure. He will remain the Secretary of the Indian Board till October 2025. In order to take charge of ICC, Jai Shah will have to leave the board of the country in advance. Along with the BCCI secretary, Jai Shah currently heads the Finance and Commercial Affairs Committee of the ICC.
According to the Indian media Hindustan Times, Jai Shah can leave the BCCI chair with almost a year left and take charge of the ICC. His impact on the ICC is immense. If he wants to be the chairman, no one seems to contest. If there is absolute polling, then Jai Shah will get 9 votes in his own way!
