It goes without saying that Bengalis are a mixed race. When a particular issue comes up, we all get excited about it. I don't even feel the need to check whether it's true or false. It doesn't take a lot of momentum to make even a fake news story go viral on social media. A few days ago I saw a post on Facebook. On the issue of quota reform movement, a student herself posted on her Facebook that she is alive. Because earlier, the photo of the student was circulated that she was killed in the clash of the quota movement. Rumors reach such a level that even a living person can be established as dead. Again, the concerned person has to prove the truth or falsehood of that news.

Many of us do not think about what we are promoting and why we are doing it. What am I interested in or passionate about? Is what we are obsessed with teaching society anything good at all? Or making society more corrupt? Such thoughts do not occur to us. We ourselves teach our children social manners, culture and education in various ways along with studies. Lately I have been relying more on social media as one of the mediums in these cases. We are sometimes warned, and sometimes encouraged, by social media. Sometimes there are news stories that make it important for the public to be cautious. But in some cases, rumors also destroy our ability to fact-check. In fact, we thrive without fact-checking. Many times, the fact that we grow like this encourages the whole society negatively.
