In Bangladesh, possessing a license for a firearm does not grant the right to use or display it at one’s own discretion. Using a weapon to intimidate others, exert influence, or violating the terms of the license can result in legal action against the individual.

The use of firearms in the country is regulated by the Arms Act of 1878 and existing government policies. In 2025, the Ministry of Home Affairs issued new policies regarding the issuance, renewal, and use of firearm licenses.

What are the penalties for violating license conditions?

Under Section 21 of the Arms Act, 1878, a violation of license conditions—provided it does not fall under the scope of Sections 19 or 20—is punishable by up to six months of imprisonment, a fine of up to 500 Taka, or both.

Conversely, carrying or possessing a firearm without authorization, or committing other serious offenses related to firearms, carries much harsher penalties under Sections 19 and 19A of the Act. Depending on the nature of the offense, this can even lead to life imprisonment.

Furthermore, in the interest of public safety, the relevant authorities may suspend or revoke a firearm license under Section 18 of the Arms Act.

License holders are strictly required to adhere to the authorized purpose of the weapon, follow regulations regarding its carriage and storage, and comply with all other conditions stipulated in the license.

Experts advise that before purchasing a firearm, renewing a license, or using a weapon, individuals should consult the latest policies from the Ministry of Home Affairs and the directives issued by the district administration.
